My first Marlin with Go Deeper in Baja California

In the winter of 2020, a friend asked me if I wanted to go sport fishing for Marlin in Baja California. Without too much thought too, I agreed to go because I heard about Cabo San Lucas as Marlin’s capital of the world. I have fished all my life, so agreeing to go with him wasn’t a problem. Although I have never fished in this water before and did not know much about Marilyn. But I have fished deep sea before so I thought I was ready for the challenge and besides, sport fishing is always fun.

When I received the details of the trip, my enthusiasm began to grow. We have booked a 37 foot charted vessel called the “Go Deeper”. It was a fairly new boat using high-quality equipment and the latest electronics. The boat was docked at Cabo San Lucas Marina, in Baja California. We were scheduled to leave the dock at 3 a.m. Nov 24, 2019. At the time, I hadn’t realized that it was the best time of year to fish for Marlin in this area. We were heading to the Golden Gate Bank. This was about 15 miles north.

Captain Abaroa and his crew team were very capable seamen and they positively gave everyone on board confidence. Not only in terms of their skill as anglers but also in the ability to have a safe fishing trip. Being in the sea anything can happen. The mate in the boat was responsible for all the rigs, baits, and setting up all the outriggers. We were heading to the Golden Gate Bank, also known as the best place to fish in Cabo San Lucas. A deep part of the ocean where you can troll for Yellowfin, Skipjack, Blue Marlin, and Striped Marlin, this area is famous for its big fish. If you like sport fishing, it worth the long boat ride.

I caught my first fish almost instantly, a blue Marlin weighing about 200 pounds after we dropped a couple of smallish Mahi Mahi. I had a strike that appeared to be a reasonable sized fish. But Captain Abaroa, who was spying on the bridge, came running down the stairs shouting: “Let the line out, there is a scoop on the line.” This is another name for Blue Marlin. I had hooked a big one and I was in for the fight of my life. The first time it jumped out of the water, it was about 100 meters away, so its size was difficult to estimate. With the help of my friend and another, we finally got it closer to the boat and he made another jump just close to the boat. This fish was big. Captain Abaroa best estimate was 200 pounds.

After a few hours of tiring, we brought it down to the first leader. It was a battle. Three members of the trip including my friend participated by taking turns at reeling. The captain asked if we need this fish. None of us was prepared for this. I never expected to catch such a big fish for the first time. I think we were all amazed. We decided to release this huge, beautiful fish back into the sea. We all sat still and quiet for sometime after the release. It was quite an honor and a thrill to be in Cabo San Lucas, the best place for marlin in Baja California.
