14 Cat Health Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Notice something different about your pet, but you may not be sure about it? Well, cats are quite skilled when it comes to hiding what ails them. This could be due to instinct, not wanting to appear weak or vulnerable to prey. This particular behavior has been observed in both feral and domesticated cats—also why many of their human companions only notice health issues after a period of time.

14 Cat Health Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

We’ve compiled a list of symptoms and behaviors that you may observe in your cat. If you notice any of these changes, make sure you take them to the vet to get checked. There are different health issues associated with this that requires professional attention.

  • Eye Issues. What you need to look out for are yellow or green discharge, signs of blood, excessive tears, haziness, or a gray tinge to their eyes that was not there before.
  • Loss of appetite. Much like humans, when cats fall ill, they also tend to avoid their meals. There are many health issues that this could a symptom of so it’s best to not assume anything and simply bring them to the vet.
  • Nonstop yowling. This should be easy to spot, especially if you’re familiar with the mews of your beloved pet. If it has changed to yowling, this could point to discomfort and pain.
  • Sudden bursts of energy from older cats. For aging cats, blood work would be necessary to figure out what’s wrong. If they suddenly become hyperactive, continuously loses weight, and even vomiting—go visit your vet. This could be a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
  • Blood in their litterbox. This could point to UTI or even blood cancer so consider this an urgent matter. Tests are necessary in order to get proper diagnosis.
  • Excessive vomiting. Whilst hairballs are a normal thing, be more observant of a cat that’s always vomiting. If they do so more than three times a week, this could point to stress, pancreatitis, or even food poisoning.
  • Extra clumps in their litter box. This happens when your cat needs to constantly pee—pointing to chronic kidney dysfunction or UTI. Observe their drinking patterns as well. If they drink more than average, do visit the vet.
  • Whilst they have always been known to be quite skittish, if your cat is constantly disappearing or hiding then this could be a sign that they’re in pain or are feeling ill.
  • Senility can also affect cats and may manifest in various ways. From constantly meowing to appearing disoriented—if you notice any cognitive changes, it would be best to check with a vet.
  • If they stopped using the litterbox, be more observant. It could be that they’re simply becoming territorial or it could also be a medical issue such as a kidney stone or bladder cancer.
  • It can be frightening if you find your cat having seizures—especially if this is the first time it’s happened. Call your vet ASAP if this happens and make sure you secure your pet, too. Keep them in a safe, padded area and avoid getting bitten accidentally.
  • Excessive drooling. This could be a symptom of different health issues. From dental diseases, cancer, and even kidney failure.
  • This could point to problems with dehydration. Whilst it may not be that alarming at first, know that it could stretch their colon and at worst, may even require surgery.
  • Sudden weight loss. The easiest to spot among the different changes, especially if your cat had always been of a healthy weight. This could point to kidney or liver problems, diabetes, cancer or heart disease. Take your pet to the vet ASAP and get them properly diagnosed.

Remember, you can avoid a number of health issues through early detection. Pay more attention to any changes with your pet and always get them checked instead of simply assuming things.
